Understanding Error 3194
Error 3194 is one of the most frequently encountered iOS errors. It occurs when your computer cannot communicate with Apple’s software update servers, or when you’re trying to install an iOS version that Apple is no longer signing. This error is particularly common when downgrading iOS.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
1. Check iOS Signing Status
The most common cause of Error 3194 is attempting to install an unsigned iOS version. Apple stops signing older versions shortly after releasing a new update.
- Check the current signing status on our signing status page
- You can only install iOS versions that Apple is currently signing
- If the version you want is no longer signed, you must use the latest available version
2. Check Your Hosts File
If you’ve previously used tools to block Apple’s servers (common when jailbreaking), your hosts file may be redirecting requests:
On macOS:
- Open Terminal
- Type:
sudo nano /private/etc/hosts - Look for any lines containing
gs.apple.com - Add
#at the beginning of those lines to comment them out - Save (Ctrl+O) and exit (Ctrl+X)
On Windows:
- Open Notepad as Administrator
- Open
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts - Look for any lines containing
gs.apple.com - Add
#at the beginning of those lines to comment them out - Save the file
3. Check Your Network Connection
Ensure your computer can access the internet:
- Verify you can browse websites normally — try visiting apple.com
- If you’re using a VPN, try disconnecting it
- Some routers may block access to Apple’s update servers. Try bypassing your router by connecting your computer directly to your modem with an Ethernet cable, then restart both your computer and modem
4. Temporarily Disable Security Software
Your antivirus or firewall may be blocking communication with Apple’s servers:
- Make sure your security software or firewall allows access to Apple’s software update servers
- Configure or temporarily uninstall your security software
- Try the restore again
- Re-enable your security software afterward
5. Update iTunes/Finder and Your Computer
- macOS: System Settings > Software Update
- Windows: Update iTunes or Apple Devices app to the latest version
6. Try Recovery Mode
If the above steps don’t resolve Error 3194, try restoring in recovery mode:
- Connect your device to the computer
- Enter recovery mode
- Let iTunes/Finder download the correct firmware automatically
- Do not use a manually downloaded IPSW file for this attempt
7. Try Another Computer
Try restoring on a different computer with a different internet connection. This helps rule out issues with your computer or network.
Important Notes
- Downgrading is limited: You can only install iOS versions that Apple is currently signing. Once Apple stops signing a version, downgrading to it is no longer possible
- Jailbreak tools: Some jailbreak tools modify the hosts file to redirect Apple’s servers. Remove these modifications before restoring
- Beta versions: If you’re trying to leave a beta, you may need to use recovery mode and restore to the latest public release
