Detailed Guide

Understanding Error 4014

Error 4014 is very similar to Error 4013 — both indicate that your device lost communication with iTunes/Finder during an update or restore. Error 4014 specifically tends to occur during the firmware verification phase. Like its sibling errors 4005 and 9, the root cause is usually a USB or connection issue rather than actual device damage.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1. Force Restart Your Device

A force restart is the first thing to try:

  • iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears
  • iPhone 7 series: Press and hold Volume Down + Side button together for at least 10 seconds
  • iPhone 6s or earlier: Press and hold Home + Top (or Side) button together for at least 10 seconds

2. Check USB Cable and Port

  • Use the original Apple USB cable
  • Try a different USB port directly on your computer
  • Remove all other USB devices (external drives, printers, etc.)
  • Check for lint or debris in the device’s charging port

3. Update Your Computer

  • macOS: System Settings > Software Update
  • Windows: Update to the latest iTunes or Apple Devices app

4. Try Recovery Mode

  1. Connect your device to the computer
  2. Enter recovery mode
  3. Choose Update when prompted (preserves data)
  4. If Update doesn’t work, choose Restore (erases data)

5. Try DFU Mode

If recovery mode fails, try DFU mode for the deepest possible restore. DFU mode allows the device to communicate with iTunes/Finder at the lowest firmware level.

6. Try a Different Computer

This helps determine whether the problem is your computer or your device. If Error 4014 also occurs on a different computer, the issue is likely hardware-related.

When to Seek Professional Help

If Error 4014 persists across multiple computers and cables, you may have a hardware fault. Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider for diagnosis.
