Understanding Error 53
Error 53 is related to the Touch ID security system on your device. It can occur during an update or restore when the device detects an issue with the Touch ID sensor or its pairing with the Secure Enclave. This typically happens after an unauthorized repair, physical damage, or component replacement.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
1. Update Your Computer Software
- macOS: System Settings > Software Update
- Windows: Update to the latest iTunes or Apple Devices app
2. Connect and Choose Update
- Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable
- Locate your device in Finder or iTunes
- When prompted, click Update — not Restore — to reinstall the software and keep your personal data
Choosing Update first preserves your data. Only choose Restore if Update fails.
3. Force Restart If Stuck
If your device is stuck at the Apple logo screen after the error, force restart it:
- iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears
- iPhone 7 series: Press and hold Volume Down + Side button together until the Apple logo appears
- iPhone 6s or earlier: Press and hold Home + Top (or Side) button together until the Apple logo appears
After force restarting, when prompted, click Restore.
4. Try Another Computer
If Error 53 persists, try updating or restoring on a different computer. Make sure the computer can communicate with Apple’s servers.
5. Set Up Touch ID Later
After a successful restore, when you reach the Touch ID setup screen during device setup, tap Set up Touch ID later. You can always configure Touch ID later in Settings.
If Touch ID Doesn’t Work After Restoring
If Touch ID on your device didn’t work before you saw Error 53, the feature still won’t work after you update or restore your device. This indicates a hardware issue with the Touch ID sensor that may require service.
Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider for repair options.
Important Context
Apple released an iOS update (iOS 9.3) that changed Error 53 behavior. Devices that previously encountered Error 53 can now be restored in most cases. However, if the Touch ID hardware is genuinely damaged or was replaced by an unauthorized repair, Touch ID functionality will not work even after a successful restore.
